Home Heat Pump Repair

Heat pump repair in Hernando, MS for comfort in both seasons

A heat pump works all year, so a single fault can cost you cooling in summer and heating in winter. Our technicians test both modes and the controls that switch between them.

  • Defrost and reversing valve checks
  • Backup heat evaluated
  • Inverter systems diagnosed

How heat pumps fail differently from furnaces and air conditioners

A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it. In summer it pulls heat out of your home and releases it outdoors, just like an air conditioner. In winter it reverses the process, extracting heat from outdoor air and delivering it inside. That reversal depends on components that a standard air conditioner does not have, and those components are where many heat pump problems begin.

The reversing valve is the part that switches the direction of refrigerant flow. It is controlled by an electrical solenoid and a signal from the thermostat. If the solenoid coil fails, the thermostat wiring is configured incorrectly, or the valve itself sticks, the system may heat when it should cool or cool when it should heat. We test the signal, the coil and the valve operation to identify which piece is at fault.

Light frost and a short burst of steam in winter are normal. A block of ice that keeps growing is not.

Defrost problems are the most common winter complaint. In cold, damp weather, frost naturally forms on the outdoor coil. A working heat pump periodically runs a defrost cycle to melt it, which can produce steam and a whooshing sound that surprises many homeowners. That is normal. What is not normal is a coil encased in thick ice that never clears. A failed defrost control board, a bad coil temperature sensor, a stuck reversing valve or low refrigerant can all prevent proper defrosting.

Backup heat is another area to watch. Most heat pumps have supplemental heat, either electric resistance strips or a furnace in a dual fuel setup, for very cold weather or defrost periods. If backup heat runs constantly, your energy bills can rise sharply. That can point to a heat pump that is not producing heat, a thermostat configured to call for auxiliary heat too early, or a sensor problem. The emergency heat setting is meant for true emergencies and should not be left on as a normal operating mode.

Variable speed heat pumps add inverter electronics that monitor pressures and temperatures and adjust compressor speed continuously. These systems often store fault codes that guide diagnosis. Our technicians use manufacturer diagnostic information along with their own measurements, because a code tells you where a problem was detected, not always what caused it.

Some failures are shared with air conditioners: weak capacitors, failed outdoor fan motors, refrigerant leaks and dirty coils. The difference is that a heat pump sees these stresses in both seasons, which is why twice-yearly maintenance pays off. If your system is aging and repairs are becoming frequent, our Heat Pump Installation page covers how we size and set up a replacement.

Every repair is quoted at a flat rate before work begins, backed by a written workmanship warranty, and completed by EPA certified technicians who handle refrigerant properly.

Heat pump symptoms that need a technician

Some heat pump behavior surprises people but is normal. These symptoms usually are not.

Thick ice that does not clear

Persistent ice points to a defrost control, sensor, airflow or refrigerant problem.

Backup heat running constantly

The heat pump itself may not be producing heat, or controls may be misconfigured.

Cool air during heating mode

Reversing valve trouble or low charge can leave the system blowing lukewarm air.

Wrong mode operation

Heating when cooling is called for, or the reverse, suggests a valve or control fault.

Fault codes on the thermostat

Variable speed systems report problems that deserve a proper diagnosis.

Grinding or rattling outdoors

Fan motor bearings, loose panels or ice contact with the fan blade need attention.

Our heat pump diagnostic sequence

Because heat pumps operate in two directions, we test more than a typical cooling or heating call.

  1. Control and thermostat review

Mode settings, reversing valve wiring and auxiliary heat staging are checked for correct configuration.

  2. Heating mode test

The system runs in heating while supply temperature, pressures and outdoor coil behavior are recorded.

  3. Cooling mode test

Operation is switched to confirm the reversing valve shifts properly and cooling performance is normal.

  4. Defrost evaluation

Defrost board, coil sensor and cycle operation are tested, including a forced defrost where applicable.

  5. Electrical and backup heat checks

Capacitors, motors, heat strips or furnace backup are tested for correct operation.

What affects a heat pump repair

The cause of the fault and the type of system determine how involved a repair becomes.

Main variables in heat pump repair
Type of heat pumpSingle stage, two stage and variable speed systems differ in controls, parts and diagnostic tools.
Failed componentSensors and capacitors are modest repairs. Reversing valves and compressors involve refrigerant work.
Refrigerant leaksLeak location and repairability affect whether a fix is practical.
Backup heat configurationElectric strips and dual fuel furnaces each have their own components and controls.
System ageOlder heat pumps with repeated problems may be better candidates for replacement.

Heat pump repair questions

Yes. During a defrost cycle, the outdoor coil warms up to melt frost, which can release steam and make a whooshing sound. This usually lasts a few minutes.

Heat pump supply air is typically cooler than furnace air, even when it is heating correctly. If the air feels cold rather than mildly warm, or rooms are not reaching the set temperature, the system should be checked.

Only when the heat pump itself is not working and you are waiting for repair. Emergency heat relies entirely on backup heat, which usually costs more to operate.

Heavy ice buildup can restrict airflow, stress the compressor and damage fan blades. If ice does not clear during normal defrost cycles, call for service.

Twice a year is ideal, typically in spring before cooling season and in fall before heating season.

Heat pump owners on getting comfort back

Our heat pump was buried in ice for two days. The technician replaced a failed defrost sensor and explained what normal frost looks like so we would know next time.

Lisa G.Homeowner in Hernando, MS

Our electric bill doubled because backup heat was doing all the work. A thermostat setting was wrong and a capacitor was weak. Both were fixed in one visit.
